Diamond Deli

The Diamond Deli in downtown Akron is one of those places that's everybody's favorite for lunch. Now open until 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, Diamond Deli is fast becoming a favorite place for dinner, too.

Some come for the “Best Corned Beef in Akron.” Others come for the nearly 30 sandwich and sub combinations, hot or cold, on a lengthy menu that features homemade soups and chili, fresh garden salads and fresh homemade side salads. And everyone comes for the made-from-scratch carrot cake.    

“Nothing is store bought,” said owner Chuck Magilavy. “Everything is fresh and homemade.”  

 Motivated by a lifelong desire to own and operate his own restaurant, Chuck Magilavy opened the Diamond Deli with no restaurant experience other than brief stints as a server and bartender. Driven by his desire to serve fresh homemade food, he learned on the job.

“I'm still learning on the job,” he said.

Chuck's son Brett, 26, joined his dad seven years ago. Chuck's other son Chad, 19, joined him 2 years ago. Like father, like sons, they, too, are learning on the job.

Both are good students. Just 15 years after opening, Diamond Deli is a fixture in downtown Akron, as popular with working professionals as it is with college students. Employers love it, too, knowing that boxed lunches from Diamond Deli alleviate the sting of mandatory business luncheons at the office.

Diamond Deli also prepares party trays and desserts for office parties, holiday festivities, special occasions, retirements and more. On weekends, Diamond Deli is available for private parties such as wedding rehearsal dinners, baby showers, office parties and other celebrations.
